KTM Performance Part Replacement Guide: How To Change Wheels Without Damaging The Tubes

leading online resource for motorcycles, parts, and accessories
Even without a tire changing machine, you can safely replace a key KTM performance part: the wheels. Below is a guide that can help you change your tires without puncturing a hole in the tubes:

1.For this task, you need to have the following items:

• Suitable tire irons
• Valve stem tool
• Lube or soapy water
• Bead breaker
• Breezer tire tool
• Compressed air
• Bead expander or any similar item

2. Once you have all the items ready, let the air out by removing the valve stem with a valve stem tool. Don’t forget to support the wheel while doing this.

3. Break the bead loose on both sides. You can do this manually or with the use of the bead breaker.

4. Using two tire irons, lever the bead over the rim. Then, work your way around the rim of the wheel. You can also use a third or smaller tire iron if you are having difficulty with this step. Some lube or soapy water can also help you out.

5. If the bike has a lube, pull it out.

6. Lever the other bead off the wheel rim. To do this, push the bead opposite the bead you are working on down into the center of the wheel rim. This will permit the bead you are working on to easily slip over the wheel rim.

7. To get the new tire on, simply reverse the process. Keep in mind that some tires have a directional arrow; if there is one, make sure the arrow is pointed in the direction of the forward rotation of the wheel.

8. Put the tube in and align the balance mark on the tire with the valve stem hole.

9. Install the valve stem nut and the valve stem.

10. Add a little bit of air to the tube.

11. Lube and push the bead on one side down into the center of the wheel rim and use a tire iron to keep it from coming out.

12. On the side of the wheel, use the Breezer tire tool to lever the tire bead over the wheel rim in very small bites.

13. Every time you move the Breezer, work the bead opposite the Breezer deeper into the center of the rim. However, take care to not pinch the tube.

14. Add some more lube around the bead on both sides.

15. Make sure the valve stem is pointed toward the axle and air it up.

16. Make sure the bead seats fully on the rim. If not let the air out, re-lube and air it up again. Use only 56 PSI so that you don’t blow the bead off the rim.
17.    Lastly, tighten the valve stem nut (only finger tight).

By following these steps, you don’t have to use an expensive tire changing machine. And you can expect better performance from your bike due to the new wheels.
